As women, we sometimes spend months, if not YEARS, planning our weddings. Why don't we spend more time planning our births?
The outcome of your birth sets in motion your confidence as a mother. If you leave your birth feeling unheard and bullied, you're not going to come into motherhood with a sense of "I can do anything!"; which is so important when it comes to the extreme challenge of parenthood. We are bombarded by ideas and information as parents and if you don't have a strong sense of autonomy, in being able to sift through information and make your own empowered decision, parenting may seem really big and daunting. Planning our birth, and the research and decision making that goes into it, is a great pre-game to the kind of purposeful parenting it takes to raise children. We have to be able to sort through all of the information, and make our own educated decisions based on what's right for us.
Birth is an intimate experience for women. I'm not talking about orgasmic births, but just the deep connection that women have with birth and their value as a woman. Right, wrong or indifferent, the way we birth our babies can have a deep effect on how we view our womanhood.
Achieving an empowered birth is not about giving birth the right way. Cesareans, vaginal births with epidurals, natural un-medicated births, homebirths, birth center births - they can ALL be empowering. What matters is whether or not the mom feels like she was in charge of her body. We are simply unable to control all of the variables with birth but we can plan for what we want, and get a plan for how to handle curve balls. Planning your birth sets you up to leave your birth feeling empowered and strong.
Ready to run the world, as Mamas.
